School Governance at Prospect Hill Junior School

We know how a joint effort by pupils, parents and schools can make a difference to a child’s education. The Governing Body is one way by which this partnership is promoted.

On the Governing Body are parents, staff, local authority nominated persons, representatives from the community and the Head Teacher.

The purpose of governance is to provide confident and strong strategic leadership which leads to robust accountability, oversight and assurance for educational and financial performance.

All governance boards, no matter what type of school or how many schools they govern, have three core functions:

• Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
• Holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management of staff; and
• Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent.

Governors make sure that information regarding the work of the school and the Governing Body is available for all stakeholders including parents/carers, the Local Authority and Ofsted.

It is imperative that Governors and Staff not only act impartially but are also seen to act impartially.  The Governing Body and Staff have a responsibility to avoid any conflict between their business and personal interests and those of the school.   There is therefore a legal duty on all Governors to declare an interest where appropriate to avoid any potential conflict/question of bias when considering items of business at Governor meetings.  The Governor concerned may be asked to withdraw from a meeting, whilst the agenda item is discussed. With this in mind, the school has a legal duty to keep a Register of Business Interests for all Governors and Headteacher.  This allows Governors to demonstrate that they do not benefit personally from decisions they make when spending public money.  Please see below.

The Governing Body meet 3 times per year as a whole governing body at termly meetings and have monthly meetings in addition.  Please see below for Termly meeting attendance records.
