What you can do to help at home:

We really appreciate all your support at home. Our aim this year is to work with you to support your child in reaching their potential. We want to build on the fabulous work they did last year so that we have confident, independent learners.

This term we are going to really focus on the basics of reading, writing and times tables.  

Your child has already been given a reading book and reading record. Please can you continue to listen to your child read every day and record what you focus on. Their reading targets have been glued into the front so that you know what to work on next. Their understanding of the characters’ feelings and their description of events are really important. Please ensure your child has their reading record in school every day – especially on a Monday as Year 4 will receive 1 team point if they have read 3 times a week and 2 team points if they have read more!

Spelling and writing continues to be a focus. Please practise the sound of the week / spelling rule of the week so that your child is ready for a dictation on Friday. Your child will glue their words to focus on in their planner each week. In Year 4, team points will be awarded during their Friday dictation lesson.

Finally, we need to continue to have a big focus on times tables. In June 2024, your child will participate in the Year 4 National Multiplication Test, so they need quick recall of all multiplication facts up to 12 x 12.  Times Table Rockstars has been adopted by the whole school to help with quick recall. Please continue to encourage them to practise every day. Class teachers will be able to monitor how often the children practise on Times Table Rockstars at home and will be awarding 1 team point for 20 minutes and 2 team points for more! If you need a paper version, just let us know.
