Every child is a writer at Propect Hill Junior School

At Prospect Hill Junior School, we aim to develop confident, creative and independent writers who can communicate their ideas clearly and effectively. Our writing curriculum provides children with opportunities to write for a range of purposes, across different text types and for a variety of audiences. 

Developing confident and purposeful writers

High-quality texts are at the heart of our writing curriculum, exposing children to ambitious vocabulary, varied sentence structures and the techniques authors use to engage readers. Through reading, discussion, oral rehearsal and teacher modelling, children develop the language and skills needed to become effective writers.

Children are taught to write across a range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry, considering how their choice of vocabulary, structure and style should reflect the purpose and intended audience. Opportunities to apply these skills across the wider curriculum help children understand the relevance of writing in different contexts.

Developing the skills of effective writing

We explicitly teach grammar for writing, enabling children to understand how grammatical choices can improve clarity, meaning and effect, rather than learning grammatical rules in isolation. Regular handwriting practice supports children in developing a fluent, legible and increasingly efficient writing style, while spelling and punctuation are taught systematically to develop accuracy and confidence.

Through modelling, shared writing and guided practice, children learn to plan, draft, proofread, edit and improve their work. Appropriate scaffolding and adaptations ensure that all children can access ambitious writing opportunities and develop increasing independence.

Encouraging writing for pleasure

Alongside structured writing lessons, children are given opportunities to 'free write', allowing them to explore their own ideas, interests and imagination without constraints. These opportunities encourage creativity, build confidence and help children develop their own identity as writers.

Ultimately, our intention is for every child to leave Prospect Hill Junior School as a confident and capable writer, equipped with the skills, knowledge and enjoyment of writing needed for the next stage of their education and beyond.
