Reading
Every child is a READER at Prospect Hill Junior School
Reading frequently to children, and engaging them actively in stories, non-fiction, rhymes and poems, and then providing them with extensive opportunities to use and embed new words in a range of contexts, will give children the opportunity to thrive. Through oracy skills, conversation, story-telling and role play, where children share their ideas with support and modelling from their teacher, and sensitive questioning that invites them to elaborate, children become comfortable using a rich range of vocabulary and language structures.
Pupils will develop a capacity to explain their understanding of books and other reading, and to prepare their ideas before they write. Pupils will also be taught to understand and use the conventions for discussion and debate and develop oracy skills.
In line with this and phonics development the school now uses ‘Read Write Inc’ phonics scheme which is government approved.
